A Photo Story Created for the Exposure.co Platform
The Arts Market in Kinshasa was founded at the Presidential Gallery Place in 1958. That year, King Baudouin of Belgium organized the very first arts fair in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Artists from various countries attended but Congolese art was the highlight of the event, and pieces from every province in the country were on display.
Since then, the site of the arts market changed a number of times as the city developed from a sleepy colonial outpost to a sprawling city of more than 10 million people.
Working with a local journalist, I visited the market about half a dozen time to interview traders and photograph their occupation.
